Close your eyes and listen. Is there a sound more soulful and more resonant than a well-played guitar? It’s the sound of life and the sound of the soul. You can make it yours. That is, if you’re up for it.

Figuring out how to read your free guitar chords?

If you are teaching yourself to play the guitar, you will be reading a lot of manuals filled with diagrams and notations. Learning to read the diagrams and guitar tablature will guarantee your enjoyment of free guitar chords, which you can download anytime from online guitar sites. The daunting task should not dampen your interest because it is actually easy as long as you put your mind into it.

Imagine now that you are looking at a blank diagram. The diagram will represent your guitar. The vertical lines are the 6 strings of your guitar. The horizontal lines are the frets. Do not count the last line on top. That is your guitar’s nut and nuts should be ignored, no pun intended. When dots appear on any of the horizontal lines within a fret you are instructed to use the string. The dots will have numbers to indicate which finger to use on a particular string.

When the dots appear without a number inside, it appears like this: O – this means you are not going to play the string. You will also learn which finger will be 1, 2, 3, and 4. The thumb is not included in the count, but is designated as T.

At first, there will be some difficulty and awkwardness with the fingers when learning your free guitar chords specially prepared for beginners’ lessons. Beginners are advised to concentrate on the chords, the strumming later. As each chord is sounded, listen carefully to the sound and get used to the feel of the chord on your fingertips.

Getting the feel of free guitar chords

Guitar chords are arranged according to basic chord patterns. The CAGED system represents the major chords: C, A, G, E, and D. This is introduced to prepare beginners for more complex chords. Often, later lessons will bring in the F and B chords and the chords with flats and sharps. When the lessons have finally been learned by heart, the succeeding lessons will be easier. Still, you have to consistently practice with free guitar chords to perfect your craft.

When you’re downloading free guitar chords, get video demos to supplement your guitar instructions while you’re at it. By watching how the chords are played, you will be enhancing your playing style. The demonstrator also often explains away the details, and you can view the same video anytime until you have learned the tricks – like switching between chords with speed. As a beginner, you probably place one finger at a time on the strings. This will be cumbersome later when you have to switch chords fast. Make finger exercises a part of your routine to help you touch all the required strings at any given time. This exercise requires placing your fingers on the strings, lifting your fingers, and placing your fingers on the noted strings at the same time. Repetition will help you perfect the skill.

Indeed, learning to play the guitar can be a lot of hard work. But then, nobody ever said it would be easy, only that it would be worth it.

Related Posts:

To Learn The Guitar You Must First Learn Guitar Chords

Basic Guitar Lessons for Free

Playing Guitar the Easy way

Learn to Play Guitar Note

Play the Guitar-Fast, Easy and Efficiently

When you start with something new, you are usually so eager to jump into this new venture with both feet that you forget that every subject has its own basic information and way of doing things. When you start learning guitar playing, you want to be the new sensation on the hit charts within one day. Woa – pull in the reigns. Learn the guitar basics first. Why? You will be a better guitar player later on. Even the masters of the guitar started off with the basics and progressed from there. There are many things that are included when you learn guitar basics: the chords, the scales, the fingering, but perhaps most importantly, you need to learn all of the different parts of the guitar.

How is a guitar constructed?

One of the basic reasons to learn guitar basics, is to know the different parts of a guitar. As you progress, you will meet different terms for the parts of a guitar and if you do not know those terms, you can find yourself struggling to learn the guitar. First of all, you should know what the body of the guitar is:

1. The guitar’s body is the large wooden part of the guitar.

2. The thin part of the guitar that is connected to the body of the guitar is called the neck.

3. The bridge is located on the body of the guitar near the hole.

4. The strings of the guitar begin at the bridge and end at the pegs, which is located on the head of the guitar.

5. The head of the guitar is on the end of the neck not connected to the body.

6. There are small metal pieces located at various intervals along the neck of the guitar. These metal pieces are called the frets. When the player presses the strings into the frets at various intervals, the strings vibrate and produce different pitches.

The way you hold the guitar differs for nearly every type of song you play on a guitar. If you are right handed, your right hand is your strumming hand. Thus, you hold your guitar so that your right hand rests on the strings of the guitar above the hole. This means that your left hand is your picking hand, and your left hand should rest on the neck of the guitar. If you are left handed, then you should use these directions as well, only reversed.

Take time to learn the guitar basics and you will be richly rewarded not only with money, but also with a life long relationship with a wonderful instrument.

Related Posts:

Top Ten Easy Lessons To Learn Acoustic Guitar

Acoustic Guitar Lessons

Classical Guitar

Acoustic Or Electric Guitar: Which Should You Get?

How And Why You Should Tune Your Guitar

Lets face it, there seems to be so many guitar minor scales around to choose from, how do you know which scale is which and more importantly, which minor scale do you use to get the right sound?

Sadly, because of the seemingly steep learning curve, a musical journey into the world of theory can cause some beginner guitar players to experience frustration and doubt or get a little anxious because they are not really sure what they are meant to be playing. Some guitarists totally ‘freeze up’ from not knowing how all the guitar minor scales fit together or how they relate to each other on the fret board, this can also leave you feeling down and disheartened because your not at ease with the one thing you want and love to do.

Lets clear up the confusion surrounding minor scales and deal with the five most common guitar minor scales and shapes available to us, so you can just get on with the matter at hand – playing the guitar.

Learning the five fingering patterns below to these widely used guitar minor scales will clear up any confusion you may have and give you more than a lifetimes worth of creativity to mess around with.

The Minor Pentatonic Scale

The minor pentatonic scale is a five note scale that can be identified by its minor third interval from the first note of the scale to the second note of the scale. If you ever get stuck for a minor scale to play over a minor chord, this is your safest option, it will work perfectly every time. Everyone uses this scale, now its your turn.

G Minor Pentatonic Scale
E———————————–|——————————–|
B———————————–|——————————–|
G———————————–|——————————–|
D————————–3—-5–|——————————–|
A—————–3—-5———–|——————————–|
E——-3—–6——————–|——————————–|

Pentatonic scales are more widely used than any other scale as they can be used in nearly all forms of western music. Memorize the pattern or fingering on the low E string, whatever position you start from on the fret board, it is the same for any key that you work in.

The Minor Blues Scale

Once you have the minor pentatonic scale under your fingers you might want to start to play with a more bluesy feel to your music, if so, just insert the ‘blue note’, as it is called into your mix by putting the fourth note between the minor 3rd and 5th of the pentatonic scale:

The Dorian Minor Scale

If you want your song to have a bit more of a funky flavor, try the Dorian minor scale. Convert the pentatonic scale into a Dorian minor scale by adding in the 2nd note and the 6th note onto the original five notes. If you have ever heard the term Dorian Funk, it is because the licks or riffs you heard were built from the Dorian scale, the second mode of the major scale. At this point, don’t worry about what all that jargon is I just said, just learn the pattern or fingering and when you have your chance to play over a minor chord, play this shape to get a Dorian sound. Think of it as a pentatonic scale with a couple of other notes.

The Aeolian Minor Scale

The Aeolian minor scale is the sixth of the seven modes from the major scale and starts from the 6th degree of any major scale. You will find it is used extensively in rock and heavy metal settings. Compare the Dorian and Aeolian patterns and you will see that they are practically identical. They differ from each other by just one note, the Aeolian has a flattened 6th note, whereas the Dorian scale has a natural 6.

A——————3—-5–6———–|——————————–|

When called to play over a minor chord, the pentatonic scale will fit over all guitar minor chords. When the time comes that you feel confident enough to start to experiment, try the Dorian mode and Aeolian mode and see which one you like, just experiment and follow your ears. If you start to feel adventurous you can start to ‘fuse’ different patterns together, hence ‘fusion’ music, don’t be afraid to experiment. Now go and learn the above guitar minor scales.

Learning guitar scales can be a very frustrating experience for many guitarists. It’s very easy to feel totally overwhelmed with just how much needs to be learned. To learn and master every possible guitar scale out there would take many lifetimes. Because of this, many guitarists find it hard even knowing where to start!

In this article I’ll reveal three powerful tips to help you in your quest for guitar scale mastery. They are designed to help reduce any feelings of overwhelm that you may currently have. Let’s take a look at the tips now…

**Tip #1: Develop a written plan for learning guitar scales.**

This is really important. It is vital to introduce some structure into your scale learning process. Rather than aimlessly practicing guitar scales, you want to become laser focused. This is achieved by writing down things such as…

- How much time each day you will devote to scale practice.
- What guitar scales you need to learn, in order to play the style of music that you love.
- What keys are the most common to the style of music that you play.
- What specific guitar scale exercises you will learn.
- What books, DVDs and other resources you will use to learn scales.
- What specific things that you don’t understand yet.

If you don’t know how to work out the stuff above, then I recommend booking some lessons with a professional guitar tutor. Make sure that they can play the style of music that you love. It’s not much point asking a classical guitar tutor what scales you need to learn for jazz guitar!

**Tip #2: Learn one scale at a time.**

I can’t stress this tip enough. A major reason why many guitarists never master guitar scales is that they try to learn too many at once. This usually causes them to learn scales on a very superficial level. They may know lots of scales, but they definitely haven’t mastered any. This causes them to sound very unmusical when they improvise. They just sound like they are running up-and-down scales.

**Tip #3: Don’t worry about trying to learn guitar scales in all 12 keys.**

This advice goes against what a lot of guitar tutors and guitar books say. The reason why I say it is simple…

Trying to learn all scales in all 12 keys leads to a feeling of overwhelm for most guitarists! It can take months to learn a scale to mastery in one key. Especially if you want to know that scale over the entire fretboard AND be able to improvise fluently with it. For some guitarists, just thinking that they need to do this in all 12 keys is too much. They just give up! Here is a much better approach…

1. Find out what the most common keys are for the style of music that you play.

2. List the keys in order. You will put the most common key at the top, and the least common key at the bottom.

3. Master the key that is at the top of the list.

4. Master, (one at a time), the rest of the keys on your list.

There we have it! Implement these three tips and turbo-charge your ability to learn guitar scales!

Related Posts:

Guitar Scales Practice Tip – The Biggest Reason Why…

Guitar Minor Scale Secrets

Ultimate Guitar Players Cheat sheet Printout!

Learn Guitar With Guitar Inn’s Video Lessons

Play the Guitar-Fast, Easy and Efficiently

The guitar, be it electric or acoustic, is the most versatile of instruments. You can strum a few chords, adopt a highly disciplined classical guitar technique, or play sophisticated jazz chord and scale progressions. The choice is yours. Whatever your bag, the journey to achieving your goal and the fundamental sound is the real buzz.

It's a funny thing, but music is unlike most other activities. Take football for example, there is no escaping the fact that if you want to play pro-football you had better be good and there are no short cuts. Technique and fitness is an absolute must. Musical expression is different and shares may similarities with the spoken word. A few well chosen words can be far more effective than a tidal wave of sophisticated verbal statement. So it is with playing the guitar.

It’s a funny thing, but music is unlike most other activities.

Arguably, the most successful singer songwriter who ever lived is Bob Dylan, whose delivery is based essentially on guitar sounds combined with an awesome skill as a lyricist. His musical structure is generally simple – but the simplicity of the music combined with great hook lines and lyrics is bang on the nail as a musical statement.

So the fact to take on board is that technical ability has little to do with musical talent. If your groove is a simple country, reggae or blues feel you can be damn good and highly relevant without being a technical genius. The simple player who plays with feel and taste is a musician, the same as a highly accomplished classical or jazz guitarist. It is amazing how formally trained musicians, i.e. classical, or other technical jazz players, are usually the most ineffective exponents of rock, country, pop or blues music.

Playing guitar is essentially an attitude, combined with feel and the necessary musical knowledge to express what you wish to play. Don’t be fooled into following the path of so many potentially great musicians and be fazed by more accomplished players. When you tune in to the simplicity of a player such as the great blues guitarist B. B. King, you can’t help but be affected by his economy of notes, played in such a meaningful, soulful musical context.

Playing guitar has an infinite number of possibilities. It is the most adaptable, useable instrument, and it’s the journey to your goal that’s the fun part. You will never stop learning guitar. Each time you pick it up you will discover something new and it needn’t be hard to play to be relevant!

Related Posts:

Practicing Technique With An Easy Guitar Song To Learn

Electric Guitar Tabs Explained

Guitar Minor Scale Secrets

Acoustic Guitar Tablature – Is It Real Sheet Music?

Acoustic Or Electric Guitar: Which Should You Get?

*Quick tip: Play each single note and sing the letter of each note in your head as you play, this will help train your ears…*

For most of us, learning an instrument requires an enormous amount of dedication and understanding of fundamental principles and techniques before embarking upon long practices. Practicing long hours will finally reward the student with a working knowledge of the instrument. And, if they are lucky, after many years of hard work they may even become quite a masterful player. The guitar, especially, is held up as one of the more popular instruments to which people dedicate themselves. With images of musical grandeur in their heads they apply themselves night and day to the practice of guitar in the hopes of someday becoming proficient. But there are a rare few of us who can actually learn guitar by ear, an inherent skill that graces only the lucky among us.

Ultimately, you never know until you try if you can learn guitar by ear. If you are interested in taking up guitar and have a few chosen songs that you would really like to learn to play, try it out. If you play the song on a CD, those who can play guitar by ear can mimic the notes they hear on their own instruments. For those who have a working knowledge of the guitar, the ways in which to hold it and the tone that each vibrating chord makes the possibility to learn guitar by ear far more probable. Until you really understand the sounds that each chord is capable of making, it will be difficult to replicate the sounds you hear in your music on the strings of your guitar.

In some cases it is possible to train yourself to learn guitar by ear. Begin by learning the sounds the strings make on your guitar; really process this and hear it in your head as well as your ears. Listen to how the sounds change as you change chords and begin to listen to the music on your CDs with an ear towards those chord changes. You will soon begin to hear chord changes in the songs that you have listened to over and over without ever previously recognizing those chords. It’s amazing how your ear changes once you begin to learn guitar; suddenly you are able to make those necessary correlations between the sound that your guitar makes and the sound that the guitar makes in some of your favorite songs. Pick one part of the song and begin to try it out on your own guitar; keep trying until you are able to replicate the sound. Soon enough you’ll be able to piece the song together; often sounds are just repetition of the same chords.

While playing music adeptly by ear is in inherent skill, you can still learn guitar by ear if you are dedicated and single-minded in your task.

Related Posts:

To Learn The Guitar You Must First Learn Guitar Chords

Practicing Technique With An Easy Guitar Song To Learn

Playing Guitar the Easy way

What You Should Know About Beginner Guitar Chords

Electric Guitar Tabs Explained
